RG2011... Kisah bunga kertas...

Three flowers, three leaves and the love story XVIII century

Bougainville is the most common ornamental plant in Eilat, yes, probably, and all Israel. This plant gardeners love and hate wipers.
Gardeners love it for decoration, a long flowering period, vitality and flexibility. From this plant can generate all that fancy enough: hedge, flowering stage, vine, shrub, tall tree or a small stocky bonsai. With the help of props the plant can be given any shape: the pyramids, spheres, wreaths, etc.
And the janitors hate for an abundance of brightly colored leaves, thin and light that you can not rake in a pile, as the lightest wind then carries them.

And did so, the leaves, not flowers! More precisely, the bracts. (Bract - a modified small immature leaves of different colors and shapes, often performing protective functions, and located on the peduncle, surrounding an inflorescence). But let's turn.

Bougainvillea, and in a simple, bougainvillea (Bougainvillea) - genus of evergreen plants of the family Nyctaginaceae (Niktaginovye or Nochetsvetnye).
This genus includes several species, but how many, 4 or 18, botanists still argue. Judging by how easily different types mutate and produce hybrids in nature (and that gardeners displayed at least 300 varieties), scientists have argued for a long time. But four species are widely recognized: Bougainvillea glabra, B. peruviana, B. spectabilis, B. spinosa.

English names Paper Flower, Lesser bougainvillea, in Hebrew - bougainvillea.

In the natural state of the plant is a woody vine spiked up to 12 meters. Leaves are alternate, simple, with entire margins, oval-acuminate, 4-13 cm long and 2-6 cm wide.

White flowers are small, inconspicuous. The inflorescence of 3 flowers enclosed in 3 (rarely 6) large brightly colored bracts (bracts) that define the decorative value of this genus. Often, these brightly colored bracts, bracts called the flowers, but it's wrong. Say "what beautiful bracts," it will increase your self-esteem and prestige in the eyes of others.
Bougainvillea bracts vary in shape (rounded, cordate, sagittate, triangular), texture (scalloped, wavy, serrated, etc.) and, more importantly, color (purple, violet, orange, red, pink, peach, cream and white) . Often there are two colors of bougainvillea raylet leaves. Bicolor are either initially or change color over time. Bracts grow to 6 inches in length, and thickness as that of tissue paper, which is reflected in the English title of "paper flower".

The fruit is a narrow five-paddle achenes .

Natural habitat and South America from Brazil west to Peru and south to Argentina. Been introduced in many countries with warm climates: in Israel and other Mediterranean countries, Australia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, China, Vietnam, the Caribbean, South Africa, the Gulf states, Mexico and the southern United States. Swiss mountains o e Locarno is famous for its bougainvillea.

People's economic value, except for ornamental horticulture has not. Although one source I read that the stipules pigments can be used to produce natural dyes, it is unlikely to be interested in who may be, except the fanatics of the organic lifestyle.

Well, actually, and all of the information. Oh yeah, love story.

The genus Bougainvillea named for Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), French traveler, the first French head of the world expedition (1766-1769), a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences. Admiral himself, this plant has not opened and described, although in his later years said that perhaps he would be known to posterity only through the flower named in his honor.

Philibert Commerson described the bougainvillea (1734-1773), French naturalist, a member of circumnavigation. Commerson, and is credited with the honor of opening the plant. However, if you look at the documents of the expedition, it appears that Commerson did not go ashore in Brazil because of foot problems. So who brought him to describe the plants? And this question has an answer to the ship's logs and memoirs of participants. Commerson's feet, his collector at that time was Jeanne Bare (1740-1807).

"Bar has collected thousands of specimens of plants from exotic places around the world, including the first instance of one of the most beloved of gardeners plants - bougainvillea," writes her biographer Glynis Ridley .

Jeanne was an assistant Commerson and his nurse (weak health was a naturalist), a housekeeper. But fame is not this, not even the fact that, as the gossip of those evil tongues and modern times, was his mistress, and that was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.
She traveled illegally, because while women are absolutely not allowed to be on the warships of France. And since transportation "Etoile" was released in march along with the frigate "Budez", then he was considered a military ship and crew was in the military. In transport, there were five officers and one hundred and thirteen non-commissioned officers and men, as well as several civilians, among them scientists.
So I had to ask Joan to the crew, dressed in a suit. In the crew, it was listed as a servant of Mr. Commerson and lived in his cabin, one of the largest on the ship. But the ship was only 30 feet long and 9 wide, so that the sailors were forced into close contact. Not surprisingly, the crew soon began to suspect the Bar is that it is not a man and a captain questioned her. Joan admitted that she and a eunuch for almost two years the question was withdrawn. But the deception revealed at the time of landing in Tahiti - the natives immediately recognized her as a woman.

How it happened and what happened afterwards, you can read in the book of Bougainville, "Round the world on the frigate" BUDEZ "AND TRANSPORT" Etoile "In 1766, 1767, 1768 and 1769"

At a time when we were between the Big Cyclades, some things have demanded my presence in the transport, "Etoile", and there I had the opportunity to check out one interesting fact. For some time our ship was a rumor that the servant of M. de Commerson named Bare - a woman. She adds, his voice, no beard, and the fact that a servant to dress carefully avoided in the presence of someone else, and some other features have generated and confirmed these suspicions. Meanwhile, it was difficult to recognize the woman in this hectic Bare, which was already quite experienced botanist and accompanied his master in all the excursions to collect plants in the snow and icy mountains in the Strait of Magellan. In addition, in these difficult campaigns he had also to drag myself to the provisions, arms and botanical albums. And all this he was doing with such endurance and courage that earned the nickname of a pack animal. But there was a scene in Tahiti, which turned suspicion into certainty. M. de Commerson landed on the shore to gather plants. Hardly Bare, followed it with albums under his arm, stepped to the ground as he was surrounded by Tahitians with cries of "woman", wanting to give her acceptance of the customs of the island, respectively. Chevalier de Burnanu, who was duty officer at the bank, had come to the aid of his servant, and to accompany him to the boat. Since then, the sailors with his jokes every now and then touched his modesty, and to stop it was pretty hard. [203]
When I was in transport "Etoile" Bare tearfully admitted that she is really a girl. In Rochefort she deceived his master, stood by him before the departure of men's clothing. The girl said that she had worked as a waiter at one zhenevtsa in Paris, an orphan and that she was born in Bourgogne, where the process of losing the inheritance and fell into poverty. Then she got the idea to dress a man to find work. Entering the ship, she learned that will circumnavigate the globe, and she was interested. So she was on the ship. I have to give her justice, that her behavior during the voyage was the most prudent. It is not pretty, but not ugly, and it is not more than 28-27 years. I must admit that, if both ships were wrecked in some desert island in the vast ocean, the fate of this girl would be quite extraordinary.

After this incident, and Commerson Bare decided to leave the expedition and stay on the island of Mauritius, to explore the flora of Madagascar and Mauritius. Bougainville is the only solution was pleased.

But as historians say, Commerson and Bare were familiar long before the joint navigation and familiar close enough. A few years before the voyage (between 1760 and 1764), Joan began working in the family housekeeper Commerson. In 1762, Commerson widowed and never married. Commerson mentioned her in his will, drawn up before going out to sea, as his housekeeper, and a child, which Jeanne gave birth in 1764 and gave up for adoption (he died shortly afterwards), most likely, was the son of Commerson. And the whole story about what she an orphan, and met with Commerson's only on the ship when it came to hire a job, it was invented to soften Bougainville and deflect suspicion of complicity on botany.
