Electronic automatic transmission plant in N. Sembilan

Daihatsu Motor Company, Perodua's shareholder, technical and technology partner, is setting up a factory in Malaysia to make Electronic Automatic Transmissions (EATs). This will be the first factory of its kind in Malaysia and ASEAN and will be located near Seremban, in Negeri Sembilan.

The move to set up a plant to make transmissions is a significant one as such components require high volumes to justify the investment. According to Perodua MD Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, the new factory is part of Daihatsu's continued commitment to invest in Malaysia and also an important milestone for Perodua's 5-year strategic roadmap to become more competitive.

"We are very happy that Malaysia was chosen for this project as it shows that the country is still a viable investment destination for investors," he said, adding that this joint-venture company will effectively transfer high-end and high quality technology to Malaysia.

"While the technology is not something new, we will be the first in Malaysia to produce the electronic automatic transmission," he said. "The project is in line with the National Automotive Policy which encourages the investment of high-technology projects. We believe that this project will contribute considerably to the automotive industry in Malaysia."

The actual company involved in the factory will be Akashi Kikai Industry (M) Sdn Bhd which is a joint-venture company between Japan-based Akashi-Kikai Industry co Ltd (51%), Daihatsu (39%) and Perodua (10%).

RM100 million has been allocated for capital investment of the factory which will start operations in November 2013. The land area for the factory will be 113,000 square metres with a built-up area of approximately 13,000 square metres. Production capacity is expected to be 150,000 units per year, most of it to be used in Perodua models initially.

However, as with certain other components that are made in Malaysia for Perodua models, Daihatsu is likely to export transmissions to other countries in due course. As such, it is an important development in the Malaysian automotive industry as the plant will serve as a hub for such a high-end component.

The locally-made transmissions will be used for Perodua's models but eventually, the production will
also be exported regionally since high volume is vital to such a factory. At left is one of the

Akashi-Kikai Industry was originally established in 1946 and became associated with Daihatsu as far back as 1952. It became a subsidiary of Daihatsu in 2000 when the carmaker increased its equity to the present stake of 81.5%. The other major shareholder in the company is Kawasaki heavy Industries. Besides transmissions (including CVTs) and related components, Akashi Kikai Industry also produces suspension and steering parts as well as hydraulic equipment.

Automatic transmissions with electronic controls and management operate more efficiently by selecting the optimum shifting pattern for a given driving condition, improving fuel economy and driveability. There are numerous 'maps' of different shifting patterns to choose from stored in the system's transmission control unit (TCU). Shifting is also smoother because the TCU coordinates actions with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for each shift up or down. Conventional automatic transmissions act independently so there is sometimes jerkiness or shift shock.
