Otoritas mengaku tidak mendapatkan laporan intelejen atas kemungkinan ledakan terjadi.

Setidaknya tiga orang tewas dan 100 lainnya terluka, beberapa diantaranya cedera serius saat dua ledakan terjadi di garis akhir Maraton Boston, Amerika.

Tayangan televisi menunjukkan sejumlah pelari dan penonton dalam keadaan berdarah dirawat di lokasi ledakan dan jalanan dipenuhi dengan puing-puing bekas ledakan.

FBI menyatakan insiden ini merupakan ''potensial investigasi teroris''.

Dalam sebuah pidato di televisi, Presiden Barack Obama mengatakan ''kami akan mencari siapa pelakunya'' dan mereka yang bertanggung jawab akan merasakan ''pengadilan yang berat''.

''Kami belum memiliki semua jawaban,'' katanya. ''Kami belum tahu siapa yang melakukannya atau mengapa dilakukan.''

Obama menegaskan pelaku ledakan akan menghadapi pengadilan yang berat.

Presiden Obama mengatakan dia telah menelepon Walikota Boston Tom Menino dan Gubernur Massachusetts Deval Patrick untuk menawarkan bantuan federal.

Dia mengatakan pemerintah akan meningkatkan keamanan di seluruh AS ''sesuai dengan yang dibutuhkan'' tetapi dia tidak mengatakan apakah Gedung Putih memperkirakan insiden ini sebagai bagian dari sebuah rencana besar serangan teroris.

Komisionaris Polisi Boston Edward Davis mendesak warga di kota untuk tetap di dalam rumah dan tidak berkumpul dalam kelompok besar.

Dia mengatakan otoritas keamanan ''tidak menerima informasi spesifik intelejen yang menyebutkan bahwa insiden ledakan akan terjadi.''

Dia menambahkan tidak ada tersangka yang ditahan saat ini, meski sejumlah media melaporkan informasi yang bertolak belakang.

Kantor walikota juga telah membuka saluran darurat bagi teman dan keluarga korban di +1 617 635 4500.

Badan penyelenggara penerbangan federal juga telah memberlakukan kawasan larangan terbang di daerah tersebut, sementara keamanan di sejumlah lokasi penting di Washington DC dan New York diperketat.

Seorang petugas polisi Roupen Bastajian mengatakan dia mendengar ledakan saat baru menyelesaikan lomba.

"Saya mulai berlari ke arah ledakan dan ada banyak orang di lantai,'' katanya.

"Kami langsung melakukan pertolongan pertama. Sedikitnya 25 hingga 30 orang mengalami luka parah, kehilangan satu kaki atau pergelangan kaki putus, atau dua-duanya.''

Ledakan pertama terjadi sekitar pukul 14:50 waktu setempat, sekitar dua jam setelah pemenang maraton menyentuh garis akhir.

'Semua orang ketakutan'

Ada sebuah ledakan besar di bagian utara Jalan Boylston menjelang garis akhir maraton menyebabkan sejumlah pelari berjatuhan sementara beberapa orang terjatuh akibat kekacauan yang ditimbulkan.

Ledakan keras lainnya terjadi beberapa detik kemudian, dan asap mengepul di lokasi kecelakaan.

Korban terluka langsung dibawa ke tenda medis yang sebelumnya dibangun untuk merawat pelari yang kelelahan.

Ambulans darurat langsung dikerahkan ke lokasi yang telah ditutup untuk umum.

Para pelari maraton yang tersisa kemudian diarahkan menjauh dari lokasi ledakan.

Mike Mitchell dari Vancouver, Kanada, seorang pelari yang ikut dalam maraton ini mengatakan, dia melihat ke belakang saat sebuah ''ledakan besar terjadi''.

Asap mengepul 15 meter di udara, katanya kepada kantor berita Reuters, dan orang mulai berlarian dan berteriak setelah ledakan. ''Semua orang ketakutan,'' katanya.

Sebuah kebakaran kemudian terjadi di perpustakaan kepresidenan John F Kennedy yang terletak beberapa mil dari garis akhir maraton.

Polisi mengatakan kebakaran tersebut tidak terkait dengan ledakan bom.

Maraton Boston tahun ini diikuti oleh 23.000 pelari dan disaksikan ratusan ribu penonton.
