[Info] etceterini

Portuguese caravels under the triangular sail, laden with spices and pearls, the Dutch frigate bristling with bronze cannons, dashing captains in embroidered camisoles, sung in lines Gumilev -

"... And he went up to the trembling bridge,
Remembers to leave the port,
Otryahaya cane strokes
Shreds of foam with high boots.

Or a riot on board discovered
Because of the belt breaks the gun
So, what pours gold with lace,
With pink cuffs of Brabant. "

These are the pictures that conjures alluring name - Malacca. This city will not disappoint ....

Malacca (or in Malay - Melaka) - the old capital of the eponymous colony, a city with more than 600 years of history that has survived successive Portuguese, Dutch and English. Unlike Kuala Lumpur, there are no skyscrapers and bustling crowds, but on its streets you can feel the breath of the past.

This small town (lived here a total of 180 thousand people) is located 150 kilometers south of KL, on the shore of the Strait of Malacca.

The city was founded at the beginning of the XV century. Advantageous position in the key area of the sea route to India, Asia and Europe made the entire Malacca and the Malay Peninsula lure for European maritime powers. First in 1511 the Portuguese captured Malacca. In 1641, the city passed under the authority of the Netherlands, to consolidate the entire colony nearly 200 years. And in 1824 the Dutch Malacca changed in England belonged to the island of Sumatra.

The Dutch Square

St. Peter's Church was built in 1710 by descendants of Portuguese colonists. It is the oldest Catholic Church in Malaysia (7)

The nearby picturesque mansion also carries Portuguese motifs (8).

Street with the old red house (9)

... Leads to the picturesque main square of Malacca, which is built up even more beautiful red historic buildings. Not surprisingly, the area informally called Red. Official as its name - Town Square (town square), or Datch Square (Dutch Square) (10, 11).

The area was built in the era of Dutch rule. Over time a turret in the center of the square - Stadhyuys - Town Hall and the residence of the Dutch governor of the colony - the oldest surviving Dutch buildings in Malacca, and indeed in South East Asia (1650). Now a museum Stadhyuys history of Malacca (12)

Dutch Church of Christ built in 1753 (13).

Located next to the building of the gallery at 200 years younger, but couched in the same style (14)

A small market (17)

Fort on the banks of the river - a modern imitation, rather than historic structure (23, 24)

St. Paul's Hill and the legacy of the Portuguese

From a small Dutch Square pedestrian mall Gene Cota leads to the hill of St. Paul, where the remains of an old Portuguese fortress of A-Famoza.

Along the streets - some interesting buildings. In this there are some public institutions (25)

The neighboring house - museum of UMNO. UMNO (United Malays National Organization) - a leading political party of Malaysia - was founded in Malacca (26)

The first, that the Portuguese, having appeared in Malacca in the early XVI century - built a strong fortress around the hill, which gave the name of St. Paul. Now on the strength of the A-Famoza preserved only gate Porta de Santiago and the ruins of St. Paul's Church.

Porta de Santiago (1512) (27, 28)

Emblem of the East India Company at the gate, and distinguishable (if you look closely) the words "Anno 1670" above the portal - evidence of the transfer of power in the hands of the Netherlands (29)

Outside the gates of the picturesque green hill - the church of St. Paul (30)

The Portuguese built the church in 1521, and the bell tower in front of her appeared in the 1590-m. (31)

In 1593 the Dutch besieged and took the fortress of the A-Famoza and turned from the Catholic church in the Protestant. When they built their own church of Christ at the Dutch Square, St. Paul's church fell into disrepair. At the time of the English it was used as a gunpowder store, and the remains of the bell tower served as a beacon. (32, 33)

In the era of the Dutch church was used as the burial place of the local colonial elite. In the nave of the church - a large number of old gravestones XVI-XVII centuries (34, 35, 35a)

Front of the church - a statue of St. Francis Xavier - Catholic missionary, reversing the residents of South-East Asia to Christianity. For a short time after his death in China, his body rested here until I acquired a permanent home in another Portuguese colony - Goa (36)

On a hill overlooking the new Malacca. Residential areas away partially built on land reclaimed from the sea. In the foreground - a copy of a Portuguese sailing ship, which is the Maritime Museum (37)

Under the hill - House of Independence. This building, built in 1912 as a club, August 31, 1957 was proclaimed the independence of Malaysia. (38)

Street Independence (Merdeka Jean) (39)

Another place in Malacca, associated with the first colonizers - Medan Portugiz (Portuguese area). This small block of 3 km to the east of the hill of St. Paul - a region inhabited by the descendants of the Portuguese, mixed with the Malays - portugizy.

Embankment in Medan Portugiz quite picturesque (40, 41)

Well, the locals that assure tourists in broken English "We're Portugis" (we - portugizy), apparently does not resemble their distant European ancestors, and look like typical Malaysians.

Chinatown

Turning to the west bank of the river opposite the Dutch Melaka area, we will get in Chinatown - Chinatown city.

The first house after the bridge still retain the style of Red Square, but the Chinese lanterns and hieroglyphic inscriptions indicate that we have in other times (42)

"Selamat Datang ke Jonker Walk" - «Welcome to the street Jonker" (43)

Picturesque Chinese houses with shops at ground floor (44)

In Chinatown you can find temples of all the major religions of Malaysia - Islamic, Hindu, Shinto, and Christian.

Chinese Temple Cheng Hoon Teng, the oldest in Malacca, built in 1646. The temple is dedicated to the goddess of fertility Guan-yin. Sailors can also bow to the altar of the goddess Tianhou, patroness of seafarers (46, 47)

The roof of the temple is decorated with masterfully carved and painted wooden figures (48, 49)

This mythical creature guarding the entrance to the temple (50)

Near the temple Cheng Hoon Teng rises Kampung Keling Mosque (XVIII century). The appearance of the mosque is very unusual for Malaysia. She stepped pyramidal green roof resembles the Hindu temples of Bali, and the outlines of a massive minaret typical of the architecture of Sumatra (51, 52)

The temple of Sri Poyyatha Vinayyagar Murthy - the oldest Hindu temples in Malacca - built in 1781 in honor of the god Ganesha with the human body and elephant head (53)

And to complete the picture - nothing remarkable, except for its proximity to the three temples of other religions, Tamil Methodist Church (54)

Trishaw decorated with flowers in their carriages driven by another batch of tourists from China (55)

At the opposite end of the main streets of Chinatown - is also the gate, welcoming guests (56)

That's the, it, Malacca. The age-old layers of different ages, nationalities and religions can be seen here, like the cultural layers of archaeological excavation. Here they are merged into a single picture and thank the gods of all the local religions, the press of modern civilization has not yet been able to destroy it.

This city did not disappoint expectations, is not it?
