Thousands of people gather at the iconic Stadium Merdeka in downtown Kuala Lumpur for a rally organised by the opposition Pakatan Rakyat and NGO to call for the ouster of the government in the general election that is due within six months.

This is the first time authorities have permitted an opposition rally to be held at the stadium - the venue where Malaysia proclaimed independence in 1957.

"In our 55 years of independence, this is the most historic gathering. In our 55 years of independence, we have traversed very far," Vice-president of Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), Datuk Mahfuz Omar, said in a speech to the cheering crowd.

According to police estimates reported in the local media, there were over 80,000 people at the rally
