Criticism over PAS' view on concert growing louder

PETALING JAYA: More people have lashed out at PAS Youth's call to ban Elton John, with some saying the move will deter international acts and tourists from coming to Malaysia.
Even the DAP has joined in the chorus against its Pakatan Rakyat partner.
Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said PAS left the impression that the gay community was not welcome and would be discriminated against in Malaysia.
He added that there was no vulgarity in Elton's songs and criticised the movement for its "shallow" opinion that fans of the English singer would also become gay.
"I challenge PAS to go for the concert and see if they turn gay after that. Give them some free tickets and we shall see," he said yesterday.
Selangor Gerakan Youth deputy secretary-general Stephen Doss said PAS had demonstrated that it was unable to embrace diversity.
"PAS is clearly driven by emotion. By judging Elton based on his personal choices rather than his craft, we can expect PAS to apply the same prejudice to all Malaysians," he said.
It was reported that Pahang PAS Youth chief Shaahril Azman Abdul Halim had said Elton promoted "hedonism" and his gay marriage would have a negative effect on Malaysian youths.
Elton, who has sold more than 250 million records with hits like 'Rocket Man' and 'Your Song', married David Furnish in 2005 when same-sex marriages were legalised in Britain.
His concert, to be held in Genting Highlands on Nov 22, will be his first in Malaysia.
Sabah MCA vice-chairman Chew Kok Woh said PAS' opposition to Elton's concert was typical of the party's views.
"Yet, DAP is telling the people to vote for more PAS representatives," he said.
MCA Youth secretary-general Datuk Chai Kim Sen said PAS had encroached on the rights of non-Muslims by opposing the concert.
DAP Socialist Youth chief Anthony Loke said the wing did not agree with PAS Youth's stand.
"There is nothing wrong with Malaysians enjoying the concert. Appreciating Elton's talent as a singer is not related at all to his sexual orientation," he added.
When contacted, PAS Youth chief Nasruddin Hassan Tantawi said the party would continue to step up its efforts against the singer's appearance.
"We will distribute flyers to spread awareness among youths to tell them not to get involved," he said.
