Kapal hidrografi TLDM dalam penyelenggaraan hampir tenggelam di Lumut
LUMUT: Sebuah kapal hidrografi Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM) yang sedang menjalani proses penyelenggaraan di Limbungan Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BNSSB) di sini, dimasuki air sehingga hampir tenggelam malam tadi.
Kapal KD Perantau dikesan mengalami masalah pada jam 11.17 malam dan usaha menyelamatkan kapal daripada tenggelam sedang giat dilakukan oleh BNSSB dengan dibantu TLDM.
Dalam satu kenyataan, TLDM berkata tiada kecederaan atau kemalangan jiwa berlaku dalam kejadian di limbungan BNSSB yang terletak dalam Pangkalan TLDM Lumut di sini.
Kapal KD Perantau adalah kapal hidrografi yang dibina di Limbungan Hong Leong- Lursen, Pulau Pinang dan ditauliahkan pada 12 Oktober 1998.
Kapal itu diserahkan ke Limbungan BNSSB untuk menjalani rutin kerja penyelenggaraan pasang-pulih (refit) mulai 10 November lalu.
Kapal itu dijangka siap dan diserah kembali kepada TLDM pada 10 Ogos tahun depan.
Kenyataan itu menyebut, hampir kesemua peralatan mudah alih seperti motor jentera, pam dan peralatan pengukuran sudah dikeluarkan dari kapal sebelum kejadian berlaku sebagai prosedur apabila kapal menjalani proses refit.
"Sebuah lembaga siasatan akan ditubuhkan bagi mengenal pasti punca kejadian," kata kenyataan itu. -BH
KD Perantau sinks partially at Lumut
LUMUT: A Royal Malaysian Navy ship which was docked at the Bousted Naval Shipyard (BNS) here for refit work sank partially when water flooded the lower point of the vessel.
The KD Perantau, commissioned on Oct 12 1998 with pennant number 151, suffered flooding around 11.17pm last night, allegedly during an attempt to remove its one-tonne generator set.
For the record, the hydrography ship was also used in the search and rescue mission of the ill-fated MAS flight MH370 which is believed to have gone missing in the southern parts of the Indian ocean.
According to a statement issued by the Royal Malaysian Navy base here, the vessel was sent to BNS for refit works on Nov 10 recently and it was to be handed back to the navy on Aug 10 next year.
The official statement said that almost all movable equipment such pumps, motors and survey apparatus had already been removed from the ship in preparation for the refit work.
It said an investigation board would be set up to determine the cause of the flooding, stressing that both the navy and BNS were salvaging the ship.
No one was reported injured according to the Royal Malaysian Navy statement.
With a length of 67.8m and width of 13.3m, the hydrograpy vessel was design and equipped for conducting hydrographic survey and also meteorology and oceanography observation.
According to information obtained from other sources, KD Perantau, which can travel at a maximum speed of 16 knots, is also equipped with latest navigation and survey system such as Navigation and Command System and Hypack Acquisition System.
It was built at Penang-based Hong Leong-Lurssen Dockyard. -NST
