More foreign car companies should be allowed to set up manufacturing bases in the country to make it a hub of passenger car manufacturing.
Malaysian Automotive Institute’s (MAI) head Mohamad Madani Sahari said this would not only create more jobs but also help make cars more affordable.
According to The Star, Madani also proposed that Malaysia look into making energy efficient cars, such as hybrid models, as there was no hub in Asean for manufacturing such cars.
“We also need to open up the market and liberalise the market. When you have more cars in the market, prices of cars will drop, making it more affordable for young Malaysians,” he said during the 7th Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit yesterday.
However, The Star reported, former Proton managing director Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin objected to any move to open the local market to foreign manufacturers as RM25 billion had already been invested in the Malaysian automotive industry.
“The government is not going to throw it (the investment) away. Local cars are here to stay,” he said, pointing out that if the prices of new cars fell, the used car market would be adversely affected.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad also called on the government to lower car prices in Malaysia to make it more affordable for the public.
He said the government should cut import tax on cars as well as other taxes such as the excise tax which ranges from 60% to 105%.
Nik Nazmi said that even the locally assembled Perodua Myvi was subjected to these taxes.
A Myvi in Malaysia, he said, costs around RM25,000 before tax. After tax, it costs RM46,000. – August 25, 2013.
