Hidden among the varied stalls within the den that is Medan Selera Jaya 223, Laksa Penang Rahim has been serving up their take on Penang asam laksa since 1986.

The stall in the food court that stays open into the wee hours of the morning is a family business that caters to night owls hankering for asam laksa.

Stall proprietor Noor Jannah Rahim said the laksa is made to a family recipe. “It is my mother’s recipe which she brought with her when she moved from Butterworth, Penang to Kuala Lumpur after she got married in 1986.”

Noor, 28, said she began helping her mother at the stall when she was in her teens.

“Although my mother no longer makes the laksa, she still comes by to monitor the process because of its unique recipe,” she said.

Rahim’s asam laksa has an interesting texture made with a sardine-based broth that blends in a generous amount of fish which helps to thicken the soup.

The savoury aromatic soup has a distinctive flavour coming from torch ginger flower (bunga kantan) and a mixture of tamarind, fish, chilli and other ingredients. The appetite-whetting hints of sourness come from the asam keping used to boil the stock.

The fish stock is poured unto rice noodles and then garnished with raw onions, shredded cucumber and a spoonful of shrimp paste (petis udang).

Conspicuously missing from the garnishing are mint leaves and pineapple – which left me craving for that sweet-sour hint from the fruit which is expected of asam laksa.

While the dish as it is strikes a good balance between spicy hot and tangy, with an underlying fish essence, a side dish of chopped bird’s eye chillies (cili padi) and a slice of lime is also provided for customers to adjust the taste to their personal liking.

The asam laksa is usually served on a flattish glass soup plate. Each standard serving is RM5. The stall opens from 5pm to 4am daily, and is especially busy on weekends and Thursdays.
