Worst storm in two decades leaves transport chaos in its wake

Hundreds of rail services will be cancelled or delayed as Britain battens down for the worst storm in two decades.

Southern, Greater Anglia, c2c and London Overground said they would not run any trains before 9am tomorrow.

There will be reduced services after that time and 'significant disruption to services throughout the day', the rail operators warned.

First Capital Connect said it would be running a revised timetable with fewer and slower services, and added: 'We advise you to travel only if your journey is essential.'

East Coast warned commuters to expect longer journeys. Southeastern said services may not start until 9am or 10am while South West Trains said nothing would run until at least 8am.

Eurostar announced it would be unable to run any cross-Channel services until 7am to allow the high-speed train lines to be inspected. Air travel is also likely to be affected.

About 60 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow – half of them between 6am and 11am.

Gatwick, Luton and Stansted said they were monitoring the weather and urged passengers to check with their airlines before travelling.

Winds above 80mph are expected to batter much of Britain tomorrow, bringing down trees and power lines and damaging properties as the storm – named St Jude after the patron saint of lost causes – arrives with a bang from the Atlantic.

The British Red Cross urged people to prepare for the worst. Simon Lewis, its head of emergency response, said householders should 'have torches at hand' as well as 'a battery powered or wind-up radio to keep up to date with weather warnings for your area'.

Forecasters warned of the risk of localised flooding after as much as 44mm of rain fell in just six hours overnight.

TV weatherman Michael Fish, who told viewers 'not to worry' before the Great Storm of 1987, advised travellers: 'Delay your journey just by two or three hours in the morning and then you should be safe.

Storm St Jude: Commuter misery as rail companies cancel all morning trains

Millions of commuters face being unable to get to work on time tomorrow after a host of train companies cancelled all early morning and rush hour rail services due to the powerful storm bearing down on the country.

Southern Railway, Greater Anglia, First Capital, South-West Trains and London Overground have all said no services will operate until it is safe to run them, with no trains expected at all until at least 9am.

Storm St Jude is currently on its way to England and Wales, bringing with it hurricane-force wind speeds of up to 80mph and torrential rain that is expected to cause widespread damage.

Flood warnings have been given and prime minister David Cameron has chaired a government meeting to 'ensure people are protected.'

With the 'worst storm in years' tearing its way over the Atlantic, travel networks are preparing for significant structural damage which could halt services.

'Heavy rain and high winds are forecast across central and southern England and Wales tonight and into Monday,' a message on the National Rail Enquiries website said.

'This may mean that some trains are delayed or cancelled, and some Train Operators are running amended timetables with many train operators not running a service before 9am.'

Southern Railway's statement was typical of those put out by other operators.

'Extremely high winds are expected during the early morning of Monday, October 28. As a result, Network Rail has declared that there is a high risk of trees and debris falling onto railway lines and as a consequence, it may be unsafe to run trains while the winds persist,' the message said.

'Therefore, Southern and Gatwick Express services will not run tomorrow morning until it has been declared safe to do so.'

The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy and persistent rain which is expected to hit Wales and south-west England tonight before spreading up the country.

An amber warning for wind for most England and Wales has also been issued for Monday, with the storm expected to batter homes and infrastructure.

British Airways has issued travel advice to those who do actually desire successfully leaving the country for warmer climes: 'As [the storm] is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds, we anticipate some flights to and from the UK and transport links to UK airports may be affected.

'We anticipate publishing any changes to our flying schedule for Monday 28 October later on Sunday 27 October.  We apologise in advance for the inconvenience caused by the poor weather but the safety of our customers is our top priority.'

Airline passengers are being urged to check the status of their flight before leaving home.

Commuters hoping to work from home tomorrow had already been given a boost by veteran BBC weather presenter Michael Fish, who urged people to come into work several hours later.

Millions warned to stay indoors as most violent storm in years arrives

A huge operation has swung into action as the most violent storm in decades is expected to wreak havoc across southern and central Britain.

Emergency plans have been drawn up to counter the effects of 80mph winds and severe damage and disruption across areas of England and Wales.

The Highways Agency said the Queen Elizabeth II bridge on the M25, which forms part of the Dartford River Crossing between Essex and Kent, was expected to close in the early hours of tomorrow.

The tunnel part of the crossing is likely to remain open and will operate in contraflow.

The Sheppey crossing in Kent, which carries the A249 to the Isle of Sheppey, was closed earlier today.

The M48 suspension bridge across the Severn was closed to all traffic from 7pm tonight and the second Severn Crossing, the M4, was due to close from 3am tomorrow.

Highways Agency crisis management co-ordinator Martin Hobbs said: 'We are working with the Met Office to monitor conditions, plan according to the forecast and respond to severe weather.

'Drivers are encouraged to think carefully before setting off as driving conditions are expected to be difficult on Monday.

'If you do have to make a journey by road, check the latest weather and traffic conditions along your route.'

The Environment Agency is poised to issue flood warnings with up to 40mm of rain expected in some places.

The Local Government Association said councils would divert staff from their normal duties to help with emergency relief efforts if required.

Highways teams are on standby to rescue stranded motorists and clean debris from roads, and the Environment Agency has teams working to minimise river flood risk, clearing debris from streams and unblocking culverts.

Home insurers are also drafting in extra teams as they brace themselves for the prospect of billions of pounds of storm damage claims.

In Devon and Cornwall, police chiefs are urging people to stay indoors and had brought in more than 100 extra staff.

Ass Ch Con Sharon Taylor warned people not to venture out unless absolutely necessary and said coastal areas and harbours were expected to be 'exceptionally dangerous'.

BBC weather forecaster Michael Fish – who famously declared there wouldn't be a hurricane hours before the devastating 1987 storm – intended to defy predictions and celebrate a friend's birthday party last night.
'It's early days yet,' the 69-year-old said. 'The Met Office are not expecting it to be as severe as the 1987 storm.'

Runaway schoolgirl dumps jailed teacher lover Jeremy Forrest

A schoolgirl who went on the run to France with her teacher has ditched him for a boy her own age, it has been reported.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be identified, vowed to stand by Jeremy Forrest after he was jailed for five-and-a-half years for her abduction.

Yet she is now said to have broken things off with the 31-year-old after the relationship became 'too hard'.

She told friends: 'It's become too much, trying to have a relationship with someone I can't see or talk to.

'It was just too hard to carry on with the relationship.'

The teenager fell for the married teacher after her parents' marriage broke up.

The pair began sleeping together when she was 15, before fleeing to Bordeaux when they feared they were about to be exposed.

Their departure, in the summer of 2012, sparked an international manhunt and Forrest was finally arrested when he went to a job interview.

But the fling had already caused a rift in the girl's family.

Her former lover was told about the break-up at the weekend when his father, Jim, 60, visited him in prison.

A family member said: 'Jeremy is naturally devastated.'

But the girl's mother, who has now been reconciled with her daughter, said: 'I'm so, so glad she is back where she belongs and now I want her to go on and enjoy the things any girl her age would.'

The girl was banned from contact with Forrest until the age of 18.

Split: Simon Hall killed Ms Stanley before committing suicide (Picture: Ben Lack)

A bodybuilder who was dumped by his girlfriend stabbed her to death and then killed himself, it has emerged.

Simon Hall, 36, attacked 28-year-old Gabrielle Stanley after she ended their long-term relationship, police believe.

Neighbours called police after hearing 'furious rowing' at the couple's home on Friday night.

Ms Stanley was found alive with knife injuries and taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where she later died.

Mr Hall, who was believed to have two daughters from a previous relationship, was found dead in the Doncaster semi the couple bought two years ago.

In recent weeks, Ms Stanley had moved out to her mother's home, prompting a failed suicide bid by her boyfriend.

One neighbour said: 'He tried to kill himself last week. He couldn't get his head around the split.'

South Yorkshire Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

It may sound clichéd but the world's tallest man is on cloud nine after meeting the woman of dreams.

Sultan Kosen, who stands at 2.52m (8ft 3in) tall, had given up on finding love as women were put off by his stature – until he met Merve Dibo.

The couple wed in Turkey today – and even though farmer Mr Kosen, 30, towers over Ms Dibo, who stands at 1.73m (5ft 8in) tall, the couple couldn't be happier, he said.

'Now I will have my own family and private life,' he told reporters.

Recalling his long search for love and happiness, he added: 'How unfortunate I could not find a suitable girl of my own size. But in my fiancee I've found the person for me.'

Now his dream of finding love has come true, he hopes to find a car big enough for his huge frame so his bride can travel by his side.

After becoming the world's tallest man in 2009, Mr Kosen achieved near celebrity status, and as a result the couple had plenty of VIPs to invite to their nuptials in his home city of Mardin.

Guests included a host of politicians, including Turkey's president Abdullah Gul and prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as religious leaders and high-profile businessmen.

Not surprisingly, Mr Kosen, who also holds Guinness World Records for the person with the biggest hands – 27.5cm (11ins) long – and  feet – 36.5cm (14ins) in length… he wears size 28 shoes – had to have a wedding suit specially-tailored for the event.

He suffers from a  rare disorder called pituitary gigantism, which causes his body to continually produce the growth hormone. Doctors believe his condition was caused by a tumour on his pituitary gland, which was removed in 2008.

Mr Kosen grew normally until the age of ten when the tumour caused his growth to increase at a rapid rate – which was only halted until last year.

He is one of only ten people to grow above 2.44m – 8ft – and surpassed China's Bao Xishun as the world's tallest man four years ago. He stands at a height of 2.36m (7ft 9ins).

During a visit to Britain two years ago, Mr Kosen said: 'The kids used to tease me and I found that very difficult. But now I am really proud of being tall.'

Robert Wadlow of Illinois, in the US, who died aged 22 in 1940,  was the world's tallest ever man, reaching a height of 2.72m ( 8ft 11.1ins).
