A desperate father dashed to the scene of Kenya's mall massacre after being unable to get in touch with his wife and daughter – only to discover they had both been killed.

Briton Louis Bawa endured an agonising wait after hearing his wife Zahira, 41, and daughter Jenah, nine, were inside the shopping centre.

He waited outside, clinging to the hope that his loved-ones had survived, but it emerged they were among six Britons killed in the attack.

In a TV interview recorded before their bodies were identified, marketing executive Mr Bawa, 43, said: 'I'm absolutely breaking up. All I'm hoping is that they are safe, that they are hiding and they are waiting for a time when it is safe to come out.'

Hours later, police showed him grim photographs of bodies at the scene, confirming the pair had been killed.

The three-day siege of Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi came to an end on Monday.

Explosions and gunfire rang out throughout the day as troops hunted the final few attackers from the militant group al-Shabab, believed to be hiding in shops.

Mrs Bawa and her daughter were found among the dead inside a second-floor supermarket.

Jenah's grandmother Shakuntla Bawa, 63, from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, said they were on a mother and daughter shopping trip.

She added: 'We are so shocked that something so terrible could have happened when they were doing something so innocent.'

A London-based architect with dual British and Australian nationality and his heavily pregnant partner, who was due to give birth in the next few weeks, were also among the victims.

Ross Langdon and Dutchwoman Dr Elif Yavuz, both 33, died when the militants attacked on Saturday.

Members of the public have been fawning over fourteen newborn pandas that were placed on a single bed so they could be viewed.

The young animals were put on display at Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding research centre, in the Sichuan province of China.

Visitors were able to cast their eye over the creatures at the base that was founded in 1987.

The youngsters were snapped by excited guests that were stood behind windows.

Despite the events going on around them the cute creatures managed to remain calm as they lay on a pink bed covering.

All the time they were being watched by workers, who had delicately laid them down on the bed at the start of the viewing.

The centre now houses 83 panda bears from an initial six it had when it set up more than 25 years ago.

This year 20 pandas have been born but three have died, leaving only 17 live cubs.

BlackBerry is to be sold for £3billion (Picture: Reuters)

Troubled smartphone-maker BlackBerry has agreed to be sold to its largest shareholder in a £3billion deal.

The company, which once led the smartphone market and was valued at £50billion just five years ago, secured a deal in principle with Fairfax Financial worth $9 (£5.60p) a share.

The rescue package came only days after BlackBerry warned it faced a loss of £606million after disastrous sales of its new handsets.

The Canadian company, which has European headquarters in Slough, also unveiled plans to lay off 4,500 workers, half its workforce.

Billionaire investor Prem Watsa, Fairfax's chairman and chief executive, said: 'We can deliver immediate value to shareholders.

'We can continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company with the focus on delivering superior and secure enterprise solutions to BlackBerry customers around the world.'

Blackberry shares peaked in June 2008 at $148 each.

But the group has lost its share of the market, from a peak of 41 per cent in 2007 to 2.9 per cent at the start of 2013.

This pirate cat may not have the facial hair of Blackbeard; instead he has the whiskers of a daredevil.

One-eyed rescue kitten Sir Stuffington has been tugging heartstrings on social media after his new foster mother started uploading pictures of his adventures on to Facebook.

The adorable creature was found in the town of Troutdale in Oregon without its eye, and neglected with a severe flea infestation, jaw fracture and heart murmur.

With many people referencing the likeness of the kitten with a pirate it was only fitting to dress him up as one (Picture: Facebook/Sir Stuffington)

He was cleaned up by the Multnomah County Animal Services, given de wormer and put on antibiotics, while the two brothers that he was found with were also given care.

Little Sir Stuffington was estimated to have been six-weeks-old at 1.1lbs at the time of his rescue, on September 13.

His new owner, Blazer Schaffer, took not only him but his two brothers into her home and began documenting their new lives and their health progress online.

Sir Stuffington's Facebook fan page now has over 23,000 likes and was created so that it would 'bring awareness to the world about the importance of your local animal shelter & the lives they save every day!'

Ms Schaffer has dressed him up like the littlest and cutest pirate ever, as he and his brothers tackle an infectious virus.

It is believed that once the kittens get to a level of stable health they will be put up for adoption.
